The Bystander Effect

Back

After a short phone call with his sick father, George travels to see him in hospital. On the tram, George encounters Laura and awkwardly tries (and fails) to spark up a friendship by helping her with her crossword, which she is rather skilfully managing to do incorrectly. They are interrupted by fellow passengers, Clyde and Mick who take great interest in the graphic novel he is reading. Using Laura’s newspaper as ammo to emphasis his unwelcome remarks, Clyde keeps upping the ante on a defenceless George who is just truing to help them with his knowledge of public transport infrastructure. While George is teased, bullied and subsequently, sandwiched, Laura eventually defends George by ’accidentally’ and somewhat violently tripping Clyde. George & Laura make a swift exit together while Clyde is left, humiliated, with a bloody nose. George and Laura have a pleasant encounter, before Laura hops on the next tram.
